‘The thing is’ nominated for a Shortcutz Amsterdam Film Award!

Yes, I did it again. I didn’t update you on time. So here I am, again, with awesome news!

On May 16th 2017 Shortcutz Amsterdam screened our short poetry film ‘The thing is’. The audience, film industry people and filmlovers, received our film highly enthusiastic. Dutch director Norbert ter Hall i.a. of the tv show Adam en E.v.a. complimented us on our camera choices, concept and the message we deliver. You see Amsterdam as it is beholding the powerful message to support humanity. And yes we still need to hear the little things to keep each other accountable for the condition of our society.

That being said we are now in the run for the Shortcutz favorite movie. A jury of  11 renowned professionals will decide who the winner will be of the May edition. If so we will be in the running for an award. The winners of the month are automatically nominated for Best Film and Audience Award in the gala in January at EYE. But, all the movies in the official selection can be nominated for any of these categories: Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Animation, Best Experimental, and Best Documentary. These nominations will be announced in December.

Sooo, we need you to cross your fingers to make ‘The thing is’ the winner of the month! We’ll get back to you with the results after tonight. We are so excited!

2017 can’t wait to meet ya!

Counting the last days of 2016. The year I decided to boost my goals a little extra. I started to do more with my eyes closed and my arms wide open. It got me some awesome gigs like Jazz ’n WordsRadiatorIDFAAfrovibes and Museum N8. Next to my solo gigs I was involved in some collaborations I enjoyed very much. I want to thank my co-poets Sandy, Marly, Zaii, Roos, JNM and last but definitely not least miss drama queen Babs Gons for the magic we made.

As an all round poet works its way trough I too was involved with some cool side projects this past year. We travelled from film events to film fests like the International Migrant & Queer Film Festival with our short poetry film ‘The Thing Is’. Next to it all 2016 brought me my first publication when the Ministry of Social Affairs asked me for their book campagne to create awareness for self-determination in bi-cultural communities.

2016 was also the year I started my workshops at Studio West! I had so much fun doing it that I will be at it in 2017 too! Thank you Studio West for reaching out!

POETRONIC! We came out of the dungeon this year to give you a taste of what was cooking. In 2016 Ci Seryne and I gave a showcase at the Amsterdam Dance Event. OOOOWIEEE! That was something else! It was a starting point for more. SO! 2017 I am sooooo ready for ya! I am up for more creativity, more collaborations, more workshops, more community building, more books, more writings, more spoken word, more music, more film, more Smita James and more Poetronic!

I thank the Universe for all that I receive but more for all that I have to give back in time. We are one, all and infinite! Blessings to you, yourself and your family! NAMASTÈ.

Smita James gets her Shakespeare on

Shakespeare, strange dude, known for his writings. Though nobody is for sure what he really was about. So many messages in the message, but what was the message? So many possible interpretations. Reason enough for Ira Kip to explore one of her favorite writers.

Co-produced by Right About Now Inc. is Ira about to link Shakespeare (The taming of the shrew!) and the LGBTQ community to the light of this century with her production of Shrew her! Ira’s rendition will premier spring of 2017 at a theater near you!

To adapt a version of a play one must study it first. Ira invited me and other artist to read and discuss the play with her at the Right About Now Inc. headquarters. On September 21st we kicked off an inspiring, challenging old English (!) reading session series before the play will be written into existence. 2017 will be awesome!
